Abstract

This study aims to analyze the similarities and differences in rasm writing between the standardized Indonesian mushaf, which follows the Uthmani script, and the Qur’anic manuscript belonging to K.H. Nasrun from Surakarta. The analysis focuses on Surah Al-Isra’ verses 1–85 within the manuscript, which exhibits variations in letter forms and the application of rasm rules that are not fully consistent with the Uthmani standard. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach and philological analysis through digital observation of the manuscript from the collection of K.H. Nasrun, the caretaker of Pesantren Popongan, Surakarta, along with a literature review on rasm and the Indonesian standardized mushaf. The findings indicate that the manuscript applies several Uthmani rasm principles particularly hadzf, ziyadah, hamzah, badal, washl-fashl, and words with multiple qira’at while also incorporating rasm imla’i in several instances. These observations reveal a combination of two writing systems, reflecting inconsistencies in rasm application within the manuscript. Moreover, the script style, local naskh calligraphy, and letter variations demonstrate local influences in the manuscript tradition, offering insight into the diversity of Qur’anic writing practices in the Indonesian archipelago. This study contributes to enriching Qur’anic philological scholarship and expanding the understanding of rasm development within Indonesian manuscripts.
